Rendering Basics
Architectural visualization (archviz)
The process of creating photorealistic images, animations, or interactive 3D experiences of buildings and interiors before they are built. See our complete guide to architectural visualization.
CGI (computer-generated imagery)
The umbrella term for any imagery created with computers. Architectural visualization is CGI applied to buildings and spaces.
3D rendering
The process of converting a 3D model into a 2D image by simulating light, materials, and cameras — the step that makes a digital scene look like a photograph.
Body-in-white / white-box render
A stripped-down render with no paint, color, or final materials — the subject shown in bare form so massing, proportion, and spatial flow can be judged before finishes are committed. Used in both automotive and architectural design review.
Photorealistic
An image quality level where the result is indistinguishable from a photograph. Achieving it requires accurate geometry, physically based materials, and believable lighting.
Real-time rendering
Rendering fast enough to react live to user input — used in walkthroughs and interactive experiences with engines like Unreal Engine and Twinmotion.
Render engine
The software that computes the image from the 3D scene. Popular engines include V-Ray, Corona, Octane, Redshift, and Cycles.
3D Modeling
3D model
A mathematical, three-dimensional representation of an object or building, built from geometry and used as the foundation of every render.
Mesh / polygon
A mesh is the collection of polygons (triangles or quads) that make up a 3D model. More polygons usually mean more detail — and more computing cost.
CAD (computer-aided design)
Digital technical drawings used by architects and engineers — typically the starting point of a visualization project, provided as DWG or PDF files.
BIM (Building Information Modeling)
A data-rich 3D modeling process used in construction (software like Revit). BIM models contain real building information, not just geometry.
Wireframe
A view of a 3D model showing only its edges — useful for checking structure before materials and lighting are applied.
PBR materials (physically based rendering)
Materials that simulate real-world physical properties (roughness, metalness, reflectivity) so surfaces react to light the way they would in reality.
Texture / UV mapping
A texture is the image applied to a surface (wood grain, brick, fabric); UV mapping is the process of wrapping that image onto the 3D model correctly.
Lighting
Global illumination (GI)
The simulation of how light bounces between surfaces, not just directly from a source. GI is what makes interiors feel believable rather than flat.
HDRI (high dynamic range image)
A 360° image used to light a scene with real-world environment light and reflections — the standard way to light exteriors and interiors realistically.
Ambient occlusion
A shading technique that darkens the contact points where surfaces meet (corners, crevices), adding depth and grounding objects in a scene.
Ray tracing / path tracing
Rendering techniques that simulate individual light rays traveling through a scene. Path tracing produces the most physically accurate results and is the basis of modern engines like V-Ray and Corona.
Sun & sky system
A physically based lighting setup that recreates real sunlight, sky color, and shadow behavior for a given location, date, and time.
Golden hour
The period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sun is low and the light turns warm and soft — the classic mood for exterior hero shots in residential and hospitality marketing.
Exposure / tone mapping
The final adjustment of brightness and contrast in an image — the digital equivalent of how a camera (or your eye) adapts to light.
Studio lighting
Controlled, purpose-built lighting for product and furniture renders — softboxes, key lights, fill lights, and rim lights arranged to sculpt form and control reflections, the visual equivalent of a photography studio.
Camera & Composition
Focal length
The lens setting that determines how wide or narrow a view is — from dramatic wide angles to compressed telephoto views. Measured in millimeters (e.g., 24mm, 35mm, 50mm).
Field of view (FOV)
The extent of the scene visible through the camera. Wider FOV shows more space; narrower FOV focuses attention on a specific subject.
Depth of field
The zone of sharp focus in an image. A shallow depth of field blurs the background — a common technique for elegant interior close-ups.
Motion blur
The streaking of moving objects in an image or animation frame. In rendering, it makes motion feel real — a passing car or a walking figure — and it is often added in post-production for cinematic results.
Hero shot / camera angle
The primary, best-composed view of a project — usually a wide, dramatic angle chosen to sell the space. Camera angle choices define the story of the image.
Composition
The arrangement of elements within the frame (balance, lines, focal points) that makes an image feel intentional and professional rather than accidental.
Software & Tools
3ds Max & Blender
The most common 3D modeling tools in archviz — 3ds Max is the industry standard, while Blender is a powerful free alternative.
V-Ray & Corona
Physically based render engines used for high-end photorealistic stills — the workhorses of most professional studios, including ours.
Chaos Vantage
A real-time ray-traced engine from Chaos that lets artists walk through fully lit scenes instantly — used for interactive design review, fast previews, and animations before committing to final renders.
Unreal Engine & Twinmotion
Real-time engines that power interactive walkthroughs, animations, and VR experiences. Unreal delivers cinematic quality in real time; Twinmotion is its architect-friendly entry point.
Revit, SketchUp & Rhino
Design and modeling tools architects use to create their projects — the files studios receive as the starting point of a visualization.
Photoshop & After Effects
The post-production tools where final images are composited, cleaned up, and color-graded, and where animations are assembled.
AI in Visualization
AI denoising
Machine-learning technology that removes render noise instantly, cutting effective render times by roughly 80–95%. It is built into modern engines (NVIDIA OptiX, Intel OIDN).
AI upscaling
Technology that enlarges images while adding realistic detail — used to boost resolution beyond what a raw render produces.
Generative AI
AI that creates new images from text or image prompts (Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, Adobe Firefly). In our workflow it accelerates concept exploration — not final production.
Diffusion model
The underlying technique behind most generative image AI: it learns to reconstruct images from noise, guided by text prompts.
Text-to-image / prompt
Generating an image from a written description. A prompt is the instruction given to the AI — the better the prompt, the closer the result to the intended direction. We explore the full picture in Archviz vs AI in 2026.
Deliverables
Still render
A single high-resolution image — the classic deliverable for sales galleries, brochures, and listings.
Off-plan
Selling a property before it is built. Off-plan marketing relies on photorealistic renderings — stills, virtual staging, and 360° tours — to let buyers see the finished home in advance.
Animation / flythrough
A cinematic sequence that moves through a building, showing spaces in order — ideal for launches, websites, and presentations.
360° virtual tour
An interactive, navigable 360° experience of a space that viewers can explore by dragging, clicking, or in virtual reality — perfect for real estate marketing.
Virtual staging
Adding realistic furniture, decor, and styling to 3D renderings digitally — a fraction of the cost of physical staging, changeable in hours.
Real-time walkthrough
An interactive experience where the viewer controls the camera live, exploring a building freely — powered by real-time engines.
VR tour (virtual reality)
A fully immersive presentation viewed through a VR headset, letting clients “stand inside” a project before it exists.
Post-Production & Delivery
Compositing
Combining multiple rendered layers or elements into one final image — for example, blending a rendering with photographic backgrounds.
Render passes
The separate layers a renderer outputs — diffuse, reflection, global illumination — that are recombined in post-production for full control over the final image.
Color grading
The artistic adjustment of colors, contrast, and mood across an image or animation — the step that gives a project its signature look.
Bloom
The soft glow that spreads from very bright areas of an image — like sunlit windows or lamps. It mimics how bright light blooms in a real camera and adds atmosphere and depth to a render.
Entourage
People, cars, trees, and other elements added to a scene to give it scale and life. Done well, entourage makes a rendering feel inhabited.
Alpha channel
A transparency layer in an image that lets it be composited over other backgrounds — essential for flexible marketing assets.
Resolution
The pixel dimensions of the delivered image. Professional deliverables are typically 4K or higher, with options for print, web, and large-format displays.
