The techniques behind every IMBA Atelier render. Architectural visualization is a craft with a proven method: model accurately, light believably, texture honestly, compose with intent, and finish in post. This page explains how we do it — the same techniques, refined across real projects.

How do we build the 3D model?

Accuracy starts in the model. We build geometry directly from your drawings — DWG, DXF, or PDF — so dimensions match the design exactly. Where you send a Revit or SketchUp model, we work from it directly and preserve design intent; where the source needs cleanup, we rebuild it in 3ds Max. The model is always built at real-world scale with clean topology, so lighting, materials, and edits behave predictably. Not sure what to send? Read our tutorial: what files do I need to provide.

What is a body-in-white render and when do we use it?

A body-in-white render strips a subject down to its bare form — no paint, no color, no final materials — so the shape can be judged on its own. The term comes from the automotive industry, where it describes a vehicle shown as its unpainted metal shell: the form, surfacing, proportions, and panel lines are reviewed without the distraction of paint. The same principle applies to architecture. An exterior body-in-white shows the building as a clean white mass — no materials, no landscaping — so the massing, proportions, and silhouette can be evaluated honestly. An interior body-in-white (often called a white-box render) shows the spaces in plain white volumes, without finishes, furniture, or decor, so the spatial flow, ceiling heights, and natural light can be assessed before a single material is chosen. In every case, it is a decision-making tool for work-in-progress projects: paint and reflections — like textures and finishes — are the “wow factor,” but they also hide flaws. Stripping them away lets designers, engineers, and clients review the design honestly and make decisions about the form before committing to final materials. It is also faster and cheaper to iterate than a full-finish render, which is exactly why the technique is used for design review across both industries. For automotive and architectural projects alike, we offer a body-in-white or white-box pass as an optional early review step — one image that answers “is the design right?” before we invest in the final look.

How do we light an interior render?

Lighting is 80% of photorealism — the full craft is covered on our Lighting page. We use physically accurate daylight — sun and sky matched to the real location, date, and time — and layer artificial light for interiors: ambient fill, task light, and accent light, each with a purpose. For exteriors, HDRI environments give us realistic skies and reflections without guessing. The result is light that behaves like the real thing, which is why the image feels true even before post-production.

What is PBR and why does it matter in rendering?

PBR (physically based rendering) means materials are built from real physical properties — see how we turn them into finished surfaces on our Materials page: roughness, metalness, reflectance, displacement — rather than faked colors. Wood reflects like wood, concrete absorbs like concrete, and glass refracts like glass. We build every material from real references, and add the detail that sells realism: grout lines, subtle wear, surface imperfections. It is the difference between computer graphics and a photograph.

How do we choose camera angles and composition?

Composition is storytelling — and the full camera craft, from focal lengths to hero shots, is on our Camera page. We choose the camera that sells the space: eye-level views for realism, hero angles for drama, one-point perspective for depth in interiors. We frame the image around what matters — the view, the volume, the material detail — and apply classic composition rules: rule of thirds, leading lines, balanced negative space. A well-composed render does not need to shout; it simply makes the right thing unmissable.

What happens in post-production?

Rendering produces the raw image; post-production makes it a photograph. We composite render passes (diffuse, reflection, global illumination) in Photoshop, grade color and atmosphere, add bloom for the glow of sunlit windows and lamps, and place entourage — people, cars, vegetation — with believable scale, density, and depth of field. This is where the image gets its mood, and where we prepare deliverables sized for web, print, or presentation. The full toolchain is on our Software page.

How do we manage render time and quality?

Quality and deadlines are managed, not gambled. We choose the engine per project — V-Ray for complex scenes, Corona for speed, Chaos Vantage for real-time review — and use denoising and optimized scene setups to keep render times predictable. Most stills are delivered within 1–5 working days, with review rounds included, so the schedule is part of the technique, not an afterthought.
